Freyr didn’t know whether to be impressed or terrified. “There’s no way you could predict…” He tried again. “It took us weeks to come to that same conclusion. And you just did it in two minutes.”

With a wave of her hand, Lilly cut him off. “This is what David kept me alive for. He used me for long-term planning strategy, especially power plays against rival bosses. Based on human predictors, I agree, the creature’s looking to assimilate a human form. I’d tell the others.” She threaded her fingers between his, pulling him against her. “Except, they won’t listen.”

He loved the press of her against him, even when the subject matter was so dire. “I’ll explain everything to them, then. But for it to really make sense, you’ll need to lay this all out, then bottom line it. Maybe Mir will see something we haven’t.” Running his hands up and down Lilly’s back, he hated that he still felt the ridges of her ribs through the sweater.

“So if this creature’s had Odin at his mercy, alone, on another realm…” Lilly went quiet for a moment before continuing, “You guys have a serious problem. He’ll use the opportunity to glean everything he can from your old boss. Which means he’s coming back through that portal knowing every weakness you have.”

Freyr didn’t know what to say. He’d been thinking about that, as well. Hating how helpless he felt, while all the while feeling like the other shoe was about to drop.

“We need to find your friend.”

“Like I said, nobody’s going to find Odin. He’s on Niflheim, a primordial wasteland.”

“We need to find him.” Her voice was insistent. “Don’t you owe it to him to at least try, and if he’s still alive….”

“He’s likely dead, Lilly.” As the words came out of his mouth, Freyr choked on them as if they were covered in acid. There. He’d finally said what everyone else had been thinking all this time. “He’s dead. He went through a portal to a world where nothing can survive. He took a creature with him that causes death. Who’s vested in killing him. There is no way Odin survived.” Freyr heaved out a breath.

“But if he did,” Lilly prodded gently. “If he not only survived, but is still alive? What then?” Her voice shallowed out. “He’s a god, right? An immortal being and your king? If anyone might survive such an ordeal, it would be him. There’s a reason you haven’t admitted to yourself he’s dead, Freyr. Because you know there’s a chance that he might not be.”

“Even so, you don’t have any idea what the Orobus is. What sort of being we’re up against.”

“No,” she murmured, “but I do know how people behave. Their most likely reactions, given a certain situation. I can predict how they’ll behave under pressure. Perhaps even react…if threatened or offered something they want.”

She paused, still wrapped up in his arms. “Why did Odin allow himself to be pulled into this dimension, if he knew it was a death sentence?”

“He wasn’t pulled.
